I. Retreat Introduction

II. Application Information

1. Eligibility

  • Anyone who is at least 18 years old, in good health, and free from serious illness is eligible to apply.
  • Accommodation is in shared dormitories with bunk beds. If you have sleep disorders, please contact our Dhamma volunteers for an assessment before applying.
  • Applicants must ensure that they are permitted to stay in Hong Kong for the entire retreat.

2. Retreat Fee

  • The Hong Kong Theravada Meditation Society ("the Society") is a tax-exempt charitable organisation in Hong Kong. The fee for this retreat is on cost basis to cover expenses such as venue rental, accommodation, meals, logistics, and event insurance.
  • The retreat fee is HK$2,000 (CNY 1,700) per person. There will be no refunds of the paid retreat fee for withdrawal from the retreat due to personal reasons.
  • Those facing financial difficulties may apply for an exemption from the retreat fee. As resources are limited, requests will be handled on a case-by-case basis. We appreciate your understanding.
  • Any surplus of this retreat will be allocated to the Society's reserve fund to support daily operations and/or future activities.
  • You are welcome to make donations to the Society at the closing of this retreat.
  • Participants must arrange their own transportation to and from the retreat venue in Hong Kong at their own expenses.

※ Non-Hong Kong residents must purchase their own travel insurance, or their application will not be accepted.

3. Application Process

  • Agree to abide by the Retreat Rules and complete this application form.
  • Once the orgainser confirms your eligibility and spaces remain, a "Conditional Offer" will be issued within three days.
  • Upon receiving the "Conditional Offer", you must:
    • Book your travel tickets to Hong Kong (as needed)
    • Purchase travel insurance (not required for Hong Kong residents)
    • Pay the retreat fee
  • Before the given deadline, submit the "Offer Acceptance Form" alongside your travel tickets, insurance policy, and proof of payment.
  • Failure to submit the "Offer Acceptance Form" by the due date will be treated as an automatic withdrawal, and the vacancy will be transferred to a waitlisted candidate.

IV. Public Transportation

  • Due to limited drop-off and parking space along the roads near the retreat venue, taking a taxi to the site is not recommended.
  • The retreat venue is a 10-minute walk from MTR Tung Chung Station Exit D.

Retreat Rules

=== Please Read the Retreat Rules Carefully ===

  1. This retreat includes both day and night activities involving physical exertion and potential risks. Participants must truthfully declare their health conditions, confirm their physical capacity to participate fully, and assume all personal safety risks and responsibilities.

  2. Full participation in the entire retreat is required.

  3. Participants must observe the Eight Precepts at all times (including fasting after noon). Two lacto-ovo vegetarian meals will be provided: breakfast (7:30) and lunch (11:00). During the afternoon Tea Time Q&A (16:00), precept-permitted beverages and light snacks will be served.

  4. As this is a communal living environment, participants must self-administer rapid tests for Covid-19, Influenza A, and Influenza B on September 29 prior to entering the retreat. Results must be negative.

  5. Please notify staff immediately if you experience a fever or feel unwell. Staff reserve the right to assess your physical/mental condition to determine if you are fit to continue the retreat, and participants must comply with their decisions. Please bring a sufficient supply of face masks.

  6. For hygiene reasons, socks must be worn inside the meditation hall. To avoid disturbing the silence, refrain from wearing clothes made of materials that rustle. Clothing must be loose and modest. Tight-fitting clothes, shorts, short skirts, tank tops, low-cut, see-through, or mesh clothing are strictly prohibited.

  7. Please bring an adequate supply of clothes, toiletries, personal medications, and earplugs. Bring your own thermos/water bottle for use during Tea Time.

  8. "Noble Silence" must be observed throughout the retreat. For urgent matters, please speak to the staff.

  9. Mobile phones must be switched off (including all alarms) and handed over to staff for safekeeping upon check-in. They will be returned upon check-out. If you have an emergency that requires your phone, please notify the staff.

  10. Please take care of your personal belongings. The organiser or the staff are not responsible for any loss or damage.

  11. Strictly abide by the venue rules: No fires, cooking, smoking, alcohol consumption, or any illegal activities.

  12. Parts of the retreat will be photographed/recorded for Dhamma propagation purposes. These photos and videos will be published on our official channels.

  13. Personal data provided during application will be used strictly for purposes related to this retreat.

  14. In case of any dispute, the organiser reserves the right of final decision.
